Anna Wilks | Behind the Barn door

We’re proud to introduce our newest brand ambassador to the team – Showjumper Anna Wilks. Anna is a rider for IN Showjumpers – a family business focusing on producing world-class horses – and she has had an impressive career to date. We go behind the barn doors to find our more about this young star – from life-lessons to career highlights.

Tell us how you got started in Showjumping:

I have always had horses in my life as my mum rides and my granny owns a riding school in the Isle of Man- where we grew up. There were always little competitions going on there. As we got more competitive we started to take trips to England for Showjumping

What’s your favourite aspect of your job?

My favourite part of my job is just working with the horses, I love just spending time with them and spoiling them. The most satisfying part of my job is watching the horses improve and really starting to show their potential

What’s the most challenging part?

The most challenging part is the bad days, there is a lot more down than ups in this sport. It could just be a bad weekend of jumping when none of your plans have come together, or horses injuring themselves. You have to remind yourself that there is always another day.

Where will we find you when you’re not at the barn?

With my friends at the pub.

What are your favourite pieces from your Espayo wardrobe?

The American Breeches from Cavalleria Toscana. They fit beautifully and I find them really flattering both for home and shows.

What has been your career highlight so far?

Definitely winning an Individual Gold Medal at the Junior European Championships, which was actually in eventing.

My career highlight in showjumping would be coming 2nd in the CSI2* GP of Bolesworth.

What is your ultimate goal in showjumping?

I’m going to sound very cliché here, but Olympics is the dream!!

What’s the biggest life-lesson horses have taught you?

Nothing is more important than patience.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

You have to make your own luck.

What’s your favourite show in the calendar?

Dinard in France. It has an amazing atmosphere and the most beautiful grass arena!

Who is your favourite rider and why?

For me there’s so many great riders to choose from its hard just to choose one, but I think I would have to say Beezie Madden and Marcus Ehning.

Marcus Ehning just looks so effortless and everything is so smooth. And Beezie Madden – she is just an amazing woman rider and the amount she’s achieved and how she rides all the different types of horses in the ring – it’s really something that inspires me and I watch lots of her videos to try and emulate her. They would be my two favourite riders.

Who inspires you the most?

I could pick good riders, but I think I would have to say my parents. Without what they have done setting up IN Showjumpers as a business, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to be where I am in the sport, and be able to do the sport I love every day. Their initiative and hard work is something I will always be grateful for and look up to.
